Architecture Type: Pombaline Rehabilitation (Upcycle)
CAIS Urban Lodge is proudly housed within an meticulously restored Pombaline building, an architectural style native to Lisbon that dates back to the reconstruction period following the historic 1755 earthquake. Characterised by its monumental restraint, uniform classical facades, and revolutionary anti-seismic internal wooden frameworks (known as the gaiola pombalina), the structure stands as an elegant testament to engineering triumph and heritage preservation. The contemporary redesign honours this rich legacy by seamlessly blending centuries-old structural character with clean, modern minimalist lines, soaring ceilings, and expansive windows that fill the interiors with Lisbon’s legendary golden light.
